Measures
Each measure is one kind of value you can request, using its id.
| Measure | Unit | Combining areas |
|---|---|---|
Reported road collisionsroad-collisions | reported collisions | Adds up |
Fatal road collisionsroad-collisions-fatal | reported collisions | Adds up |
Serious road collisionsroad-collisions-serious | reported collisions | Adds up |
Slight road collisionsroad-collisions-slight | reported collisions | Adds up |
“Adds up” means you can total it over areas or convert it to other areas. See Measures and periods for why some can't be combined.
Areas and years
Request each of these with its geography and code year as geography and boundaryYear.
| Areas | Code year | Periods | Covers | Records |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local authorities | 2024 | 2024 | England, Wales and Scotland | 350 |
| Lower layer super output areas (LSOAs) | 2021 | 2024 to 2025 | England and Wales | 27,178 |
| Local authorities | 2025 | 2025 | England, Wales and Scotland | 350 |
Things to know
- Every reported collision, whatever its severity.
- Final annual reported personal injury collisions in Great Britain. The Department for Transport may make occasional revisions to historic open-data files; each Atlas release pins the exact source artifact it used.
- Each collision is counted in the area the Department for Transport assigns it to in the published record, not by placing its coordinates in a boundary.
- These count collisions reported to the police, not casualties or unreported collisions.
- Collisions in which someone died within 30 days, a subset of all reported collisions.
- Collisions whose most severe injury the police recorded as serious. Forces record injuries through two different systems, so this share varies by force as well as by collision; the Department for Transport publishes adjusted estimates for comparisons between forces, which are not served here.

- Collisions whose most severe injury the police recorded as slight, with the same caveat about recording systems as serious collisions.
Corrections and improvements
These reviewed changes apply to what the API serves for this data. The publisher's source files are not changed; when a code correction applies, the served record retains the publisher's code as sourceAreaCode.
| Change | What the API serves | Applies when |
|---|---|---|
| Opt-in canonical measure-unit presentation | On the explicit canonical request, each numeric value and any publisher-supplied interval bound is multiplied by the measure's declared scale; the response names the resulting unit and calculation. | GET /v1/data/{measure-id}?units=canonical |

Downloads
Download complete publisher-observation files instead of paging through the API. Each file has a stable hash and covers one measure, period set and source geography. Any reviewed served code correction is documented and retains its publisher code on the affected record. The source and licence information above applies to these files too; preserve the attribution and note any cleaning or reformatting when you redistribute one.
