Get a vector tile

One Mapbox Vector Tile of boundaries. Each feature carries the area's code, its name and a numeric id. Values aren't baked in, so one set of tiles works for every measure.

get
/map-resources/{geography}/{release}/tiles/{z}/{x}/{y}.mvt

Good to know

  • A tile with no areas in it is a 204, which is a normal answer rather than an error.
  • Colour areas by fetching values for tiles and joining them on id.
  • geographystringrequired

A geography type id, e.g. constituency or ward.

  • releasestringrequired

A boundary release id, e.g. 2024-07-uk-bgc, or latest for the geography's newest release: the one /boundary-releases:resolve chooses for the furthest date. A response to latest names the release it read in Content-Location. A geography whose newest month holds several releases that differ in more than coverage, or that has a release whose id carries no month, is refused with 409 and the releases that could be newest.

  • zintegerrequired

Zoom level, within the range the descriptor publishes.

  • xintegerrequired

    Tile column at this zoom.

  • yintegerrequired

Tile row at this zoom, counted from the north.

Returns

string

The tile, gzipped.

  • 400A query parameter is malformed or its cursor is not valid for this result set.
  • 404No resource matches that identity.
  • 503The referenced build artifact has not been built yet.

Every error has the same shape. See Errors for how to handle them.

Show the precise behaviour

A Mapbox Vector Tile carrying the boundaries layer, gzipped as the archive stores it. Each feature has the area's code, its name and a stable integer id a renderer can hold state against. Values are not in the tile: one tileset serves every measure, and a value is joined in the renderer. A tile inside the published zooms that covers no area is answered 204, which is an ordinary answer rather than a failure; a zoom the resource does not publish is 404, and a renderer should over-zoom past the last one instead.
