Datasets

Public datasets

The official statistics behind the UK Data Atlas, from population and house prices to deprivation and election results. Each dataset below explains what it measures, who publishes it, the years and nations it covers, and the geographies its figures are published on.

About datasets

Every dataset in the Atlas is official statistics, published by a government department, a statistics office or a public body, and almost all of it is free to reuse under the Open Government Licence. The Atlas links each one back to its publisher, so you can always check a figure against the original.

Health, education, housing and policing are run separately in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and each nation often publishes its own figures. Where a dataset covers only some nations, its coverage below says so, and where the nations count something in different ways, their figures shouldn't be compared directly.

Each dataset is matched to the geography and boundary release its figures were published on, so an area's value is always drawn on the lines it was counted for.

People and places

Ethnicity

The ethnic groups residents identified with in the 2021 Census, for every local authority in England and Wales. It shows how the make-up of the population differs from place to place.

Years

2021

Coverage

England and Wales

Census ethnicity estimates by local authority.

Land Area

The official size of each local authority in hectares, measured by the Office for National Statistics. Land area is what population density is calculated from, so it excludes lakes, reservoirs and other inland water.

Standard Area Measurements by local authority district across the UK: land area excluding inland water, alongside the extent of the realm and inland water, in hectares.

Population

Population estimates for the much smaller electoral wards of England and Wales, broken down by age and sex. The Atlas uses it for its population density, age and gender maps, which show how people are spread within a council area rather than across the country.

Ward population estimates for mid-2022. Newer ONS ward estimates use May 2025 boundaries, which are not yet mapped in the atlas.

Population (Constituency)

How many people live in each Westminster constituency in England and Wales, on the boundaries used from the 2024 general election onwards. Useful for putting election results and other constituency figures in context.

Years

2021-2022

Coverage

England and Wales

Mid-year usual resident population for Westminster parliamentary constituencies in England and Wales, on the constituencies first contested in July 2024.

Population (Local Authority)

How many people live in each local authority across the UK, estimated every year by the Office for National Statistics between censuses. It's the standard yardstick for comparing places of different sizes, and many per-person figures in the Atlas are worked out from it.

UK local authority population estimates by single year of age and sex, mid-2011 to mid-2024.

Qualifications

The highest qualification held by residents aged 16 and over in the 2021 Census, from no qualifications up to degree level. The Atlas maps the share of residents with a degree or equivalent.

Highest level of qualification breakdown by local authority district for England and Wales (Census 2021).

Health and care

Adult social care activity in England

How many adults receive long-term social care support from their council in England, such as care at home or in a care home, split between working-age adults and people aged 65 and over.

Clients receiving long-term support during the year, across ages 18 to 64 and 65 and over.

Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework, England

How people who use adult social care in England rate their quality of life, scored out of 24 from a national survey. It's one of the main ways the government compares how well council care services work.

Social care-related quality-of-life score for local authorities, out of 24.

Life Expectancy

How long a baby born today could expect to live, and how many of those years in good health, if current death rates held. Figures are averaged over three years for each local area, and are one of the clearest measures of health inequality between places.

Life expectancy and healthy life expectancy estimates by local area across the UK.

Life Expectancy Series

Life expectancy at birth for men and women in each local area, going back to the early 2000s. It shows how the gap between places has changed over two decades, with confidence intervals so small differences aren't over-read.

Years

2001-2003 to 2022-2024

Coverage

UK

Life expectancy at birth for UK local areas, by sex, for every three-year period from 2001 to 2003 onwards, with 95% confidence intervals.
